Welcome to Mija’s Musings, Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in Des Moines Iowa in September 2018

One of my favorite photos I've ever taken! A family presentation of traditional Aztec dances during the Iowa Hispanic Heritage Festival in Des Moines.

Hi, if you’ve made it this far and clicked the link in my bio thank you so much! I wanted to start this blog many moons ago. Now, it just felt like the right time.

Seeing Coco was an emotional and incredible experience for me.

Starting this as Hispanic Heritage Month begins feels fitting. My family’s heritage influences my thoughts, feelings, reactions, and perspectives. Incorporating my culture, a combination of Tex-Mex and Midwesterness, into my writings seemed appealing. A way for me to authentically comment on pop culture and current events and add my voice to the thousands already on the internet!

Mija’s Musings combines (albeit barely) Spanish and English, and I think accurately sums up what I wanted this blog to become. My Nana calls me mija, meaning honey or sweetheart. I hate to admit it but she also named her dog Mija. This can be confusing when I come to visit. I’ve been called mija my whole life, and at this point I am mija. It’s no longer just a nickname full of love, but it’s part of my identity.

When I think about writing, my identity is always on my shoulder. Mija sits in my head reminding me about editorial guidelines, my ethics as a writer, and branching future story ideas.

I spend most of my day at work writing emails, stories, scripts, social media copy, and Slack messages. But at the end of the day, writing is still a hobby for me. So I finally charged my laptop, shook myself a cup of ice-cold Salud hydration packet, and planned out some blog posts.

Welcome to Mija’s Musings. This blog is a blend of personal reflections, thoughtful critiques, and perspectives on the world around us. Whether I’m reviewing media or diving into current events, every post is a piece of my story—and a chance to connect with yours.

And since it’s Hispanic Heritage Month, from September 15 to October 15 I’ll be sharing content related to my favorite Hispanic-owned brands, local DMV Hispanic businesses, and some great content creators to follow.

Con Amor,

Silvia
